Lesotho Highlands
Sani Pass is the mountain gateway to the Kingdom of Lesotho, and boasts breathtaking views while winding your way up this hair-raising road, which climbs nearly 1000m in 8km. The reward is a drink at the highest pub in Africa.

Lesotho is an extraordinary country that provides spectacular mountain scenery, and a chance to experience the simplicity of a mountain people. This is an opportunity to explore nature still little changed by man, and unspoilt by crowds of tourists.

Itinerary

Day 1 : Lunch and dinner

Depart from Underberg and drive up the Sani Pass and into Kingdom of Lesotho. Refreshments at the “highest pub in Africa.” Share the cultures and traditions of the Basotho and the shepherds with a visit to an authentic mountain village. After summiting Black Mountain Pass (3200m) the descent along the Sehonghong River Valley is truly spectacular. Catch glimpses of swooping birds of prey, unique flora and bird life, panoramic views, cascading streams and a raw display of 250 million years of geological history. Picnic lunch on route. Experience the bustle of Mokhotlong, a small trading centre in the remote highlands of Lesotho.
.
Our overnight stay is at St James’s Mission, situated at an old trading post. It is a comfortable, but basic colonial homestead, which is built from natural stone and is surrounded by majestic views.
.
The winter experience boasts, iced waterfalls and climatic conditions that only the adventurous will enjoy. If you are lucky you might drive through snow covered mountains.
.
Absorb the peace and tranquility in this vast, isolated mountain kingdom.

Day 2 : Breakfast and lunch

After breakfast your options are to visit the St James’s Mission, go for a pony ride (own cost), or hike in the beautiful mountains. We then double back on the route from the day before, have lunch at the Sani Mountain Lodge, before the descent down the Sani Pass and back to Underberg.
